Beyond the standard toothbrush and toothpaste regimen, the Waterpik Water Flosser takes oral care to the next level. While mouthwash and traditional floss have been part of the routine, the Waterpik adds a modern twist to interdental care.

Water flossers used to belong in the domain of the dentists. I am sure many are familiar with the accompanying jets of water into our mouths whenever the dentist probe our mouths. These water flossers, also known as oral irrigators, have become more accessible and affordable with technological advancements.

The Waterpik ION Cordless Water Flosser stands out as the first powered interdental product to earn the ADA Seal of Acceptance, a testament to its effectiveness in plaque removal along the gum line and between teeth, contributing to the prevention and reduction of gingivitis.

This unit I ordered came all the way from China. There was a deal of Lazada and I was able to get this at a 25% from the normal price.

Powering it up

A full charge takes about 5 hours, and it is expected to last a month on normal use or about 28 minutes of use. It’s important to note that the rechargeable batteries are non-replaceable, but the product literature advises users to remove the batteries before disposing of the product at the end of its service life.

I think replaceable batteries would be a better option because sometimes, the batteries fail before the other electrical components of a product.

Getting started

To use the Waterpik ION Cordless Water Flosser, you’ll need to fill the reservoir with water and set the pressure, which can go up to a maximum of 10. Priming the device is simple, but for first-time users, it’s advisable to start with a lower pressure setting (around 5) and gradually increase it to find a comfortable level. I turned it up all the way to 10 and the pressure was quite strong.

10 Pressure settings are available on the Waterpik ION Cordless Water Flosser

The unit is quite compact. The compact design consists of three main components: the base, reservoir, and handle. The magnetic handle, attached to the base via a cord, conveniently winds itself up after each use.

The reservoir’s capacity is suitable for a thorough floss cleaning, and users have the option to mix mouthwash with water at a 1:1 ratio for enhanced freshness. However, it’s crucial to clean the unit after each use to prevent clogging. It’s quite nice to be able to mix the mouthwash for the water flossing.

Changing the tip is a straightforward process, all you need to do is to dislodge the existing tip by pushing the tip ejector button located at the side of the handle.

Verdict

The Waterpik ION Water flosser does not clutter your countertop. Being cordless means it is easy to move around but the size has to be right, and it is. The biggest hurdle for a countertop water flosser most, I think would be the need to plug into a power outlet. This one is rechargeable, and that translates into freedom. Add that to its compactness, you have a winner.

The many levels of pressure settings is a nice touch, all 10 levels of them. This gives ample choices of pressure which means you are free to set your own comfort level. If you wonder if it’s powerful enough, it is. The device proves powerful enough for comprehensive cleaning, claiming to remove plaque effectively. It is gentle enough and it claims it is able to remove plaque after you gone for a round at the dentist. A combination of water flossing and traditional brushing leaves your teeth with a refreshing, clean feel.

Afterthoughts

I think many of us often forget the importance of flossing. We get caught up by so many things in our life. With numerous things demanding our attention, occasional lapses in remembering the constant care our teeth require are not uncommon. Flossing tends to be neglected in our dental hygiene routines, often due to the perception that brushing alone is sufficient. However, disregarding plaque buildup can result in serious dental issues, such as cavities, gingivitis, and even tooth loss.

Plaque, the culprit behind these damages, forms when the bacteria in our mouths interact with sugary and starchy foods. The bacteria release acids to break down carbohydrates in our food and drinks. Given the prevalence of sugar and carbohydrates in many of our diets, our teeth are consistently under the threat of plaque. Unfortunately, this threat often goes unnoticed for various reasons. Therefore, failing to brush our teeth after consuming food or beverages allows the combination of bacteria, acids, and carbs to morph into a sticky, colourless film known as plaque.

The consequences of plaque are severe and can lead to cavities, gingivitis, periodontitis, and even abscessed teeth, ultimately resulting in tooth loss. Unfortunately, by the time we become aware of the problem, the damage may already be done. While modern treatments like bridges and implants are available, understanding the profound impact of tooth loss on aspects like speech and the enjoyment of food often comes too late.

The checklist for maintaining healthy teeth is extensive and involves incorporating habits such as flossing, brushing twice a day, chewing sugarless gum, consuming a healthy diet, regular dentist visits, and the use of mouthwash. Adhering to these practices can be challenging, and many of us may occasionally falter in one or more of these areas. However, these lapses can sometimes lead to irreversible tooth loss, highlighting the importance of consistent oral care.

So, would I recommend Waterpik ION Cordless Water Flosser? The answer is YES if you don’t mind the price. Our teeth are just not about enhancing our smiles. They are more than that. the health of our teeth plays a crucial role in our overall well-being, influencing speech and the enjoyment of food. Investing in quality oral care, such as the Waterpik ION, proves invaluable in preventing dental issues and ensuring a healthy, confident lifestyle.
