Breakfast Story Asok @ Bangkok, Thailand

I was in Bangkok recently and had the chance to try Breakfast Story Asok, a café celebrated for its hearty portions and welcoming atmosphere. A little context: I was in Bangkok for my annual company trip, staying at the Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park. On our last morning, as we prepared for the journey home, my colleagues and I were in search of a bit of breakfast before heading to the airport. One colleague, suggested Breakfast Story Asok – a spot she’d raved about from a previous visit. Since it was just a short walk away, we decided to set out on foot.

The Journey There

In hindsight, walking might not have been the wisest choice. Navigating Bangkok’s streets is a far cry from the orderly, shaded walkways of Singapore. Here, the sidewalks are often narrow, crowded, or simply vanish without warning. Overhead, tangled webs of electrical wires hang precariously, and the relentless traffic creates a soundtrack of honking and revving engines.

Add to that the city’s unforgiving heat, and what was supposed to be a brisk 10-minute stroll quickly turned into a sweaty test of endurance. By the time we arrived at Breakfast Story Asok, we were more than ready for some air conditioning and a cold drink.

Stepping inside, the café immediately felt like a haven from the chaos outside. The spacious interior, with its comfortable seating and ample room for laptops, seemed tailor-made for digital nomads and remote workers. If I were traveling the region as a digital nomad, this would be exactly the kind of place I’d set up shop-though, admittedly, I’d miss my second monitor.

Breakfast Story Asok has a huge dining space

The vibe at Breakfast Story Asok is relaxed and inviting, with a blend of modern touches and cozy, homey décor. Its prime location near the Sukhumvit MRT station makes it easily accessible, whether you’re a local or just passing through. It’s the kind of spot that welcomes you to linger, whether you’re there for a quick bite or a long work session.

Breakfast Story has built a reputation as Bangkok’s go-to destination for all-day breakfast. Founded by a team passionate about quality ingredients and generous portions, the café offers more than just your morning staples. The menu spans breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a variety of drinks, with a focus on premium ingredients-think organic eggs, real butter, Greek yogurt, and genuine Canadian maple syrup. Their philosophy is simple: real ingredients, real food, and flavours that feel both indulgent and wholesome.

With six outlets across Bangkok, including Asok, Phrom Phong, and Sukhumvit Soi 11, Breakfast Story has clearly struck a chord with the city’s breakfast lovers.

The Food

During my visit, I had the opportunity to try several dishes:

Burger – Peanut Butter and Bacon – 420 baht

This was my adventurous pick, drawn in by the promise of an unconventional flavor combo. The menu describes it as a “game changer,” topped with crispy bacon and homemade natural peanut butter. Unfortunately, the reality didn’t live up to the hype. The patty was dry and lacked the fresh greens, onions, pickles, or condiments that usually elevate a burger from forgettable to fantastic. A little more seasoning-just a touch of pepper, salt, or even mustard-could have made a world of difference.

I’m actually a huge fan of peanut butter on burgers. MyBurgerLab in Malaysia does an “Elvis” burger that’s pure heaven. But here, the homemade peanut butter didn’t have that rich, nutty punch I was hoping for, and it couldn’t rescue the overall dryness. The whole thing felt like a patty, bacon, and a slab of peanut butter hastily assembled between two buns.

At 420 baht (almost RM55), it’s a steep price for such a lacklustre burger. For less money, you could get a far superior burger at MyBurgerLab – which, for me, still holds the crown.

Wrap – Massaman Chicken – 220 baht

This was my colleague’s pick: two grilled chicken strips wrapped up with julienned carrots, cucumbers, onions, and a generous drizzle of massaman peanut sauce. The sauce itself brought a lovely aromatic kick, but the overall combination felt a little underwhelming.

While the portion was decent, the flavours didn’t quite come together as harmoniously as I’d hoped. At 220 baht (almost RM30), it’s a pretty steep price for what’s essentially a simple wrap. For that price, I’d expect a bit more excitement, both in taste and presentation.

Burger – Classic – 380 baht

Another colleague opted for the Classic Burger, described as their original creation featuring sharp cheddar, raw onion, and a special zesty sauce. Visually, it looked a touch more appealing than mine, thanks to the addition of onions. However, he echoed my own sentiments: it was essentially just a patty between two buns, falling short in both flavor and texture. The patty lacked the juiciness and seasoning that would make it stand out, and the overall build felt basic-especially for the price.

At 380 baht (almost RM50), it’s hard to justify the cost, particularly when you consider that a Big Mac at McDonald’s in Bangkok costs less than half that price. While Breakfast Story excels with its breakfast classics, their burger offerings-at least from our experience-don’t quite live up to the hype or the price tag.

Sandwich – Egg Avocado – 260 baht

This was hands-down the favorite among the four dishes we sampled. The sandwich featured fresh, quality ingredients: avocado and a well-balanced egg salad, layered on classic fresh bread. Each bite was harmonious and satisfying-a testament to how simple ingredients, when done right, can really shine. It’s hard to mess up a sandwich like this unless the blend is off, but here, everything worked together beautifully.

That said, at 260 baht (almost RM35), it’s a steep price for what is essentially just a sandwich, especially given Bangkok’s abundance of affordable local eats. Still, if you’re after a reliably tasty, wholesome option in a comfortable setting, this one is worth considering.

Verdict

Breakfast Story Asok is open daily from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM, making it a versatile choice for early risers, night owls, and everyone in between. Its proximity to major transport hubs makes it a convenient stop, whether you’re grabbing breakfast on the go or settling in for a productive work session. The relaxed atmosphere, reliable Wi-Fi, and diverse menu make it a solid spot for work or leisure. It’s a refreshing alternative to the typical corporate office or crowded coffee chain.

Breakfast Story Asok - Ambiance

Breakfast Story Asok currently boasts an impressive 4.6-star rating on Google with over 1,500 reviews, a testament to its popularity among locals and travelers alike. Interestingly, while the café receives widespread praise for its hearty portions, friendly service, and standout breakfast classics like pancakes, French toast, and eggs benedict, most reviewers don’t focus on the burgers. This suggests that the burger menu might not be the main draw here, and perhaps my experience simply landed on one of their less celebrated dishes.

Would I return? If I found myself in the area again, especially in need of a cool refuge from Bangkok’s relentless heat, I’d consider dropping by for another try-perhaps focusing on their famed breakfast dishes this time. However, based on my first impressions, I wouldn’t go out of my way just to sample more of the menu.

If you’re in the area and craving a laid-back breakfast or a comfortable spot to work, Breakfast Story Asok is certainly worth a visit. Just do yourself a favour and take a cab-Bangkok’s sun is no joke.
