Ever heard of LumiHealth? It’s a free health programme app on Apple AppStore to encourage the adoption of healthy habits.
What is LumiHealth?
LumiHealth is a partnership on a health initiative between the government of Singapore and Apple. It is designed by Singapore’s Health Promotion Board (HPB) in conjunction with Apple as part of the country’s Smart Nation initiative.
The app uses personalised coaching, reminders, and incentives to motivate users to engage in healthy behaviours, such as exercising, eating well, and getting enough sleep. You also get to earn rewards, in the form of HPB eVouchers by completing challenges and surveys too!
This app is something like another app which I was using earlier called SweatCoin. However, I prefer Lumi because I get rewarded with coins which I can actually use, unlike SweatCoin which rewards you in digital currency that can be exchanged for limited stuff. But that’s another review for another day.
How does LumiHealth work?
In LumiHealth, you travel through worlds with Lu, an intergalactic explorer, completing activity goals and wellness challenges to earn points called LumiPoints. These points help Lu move forward on his journey.
Think of points as a tally of your progress in each chapter of Lu’s adventure – each time you participate in challenges or perform actions in the app, you’ll earn LumiPoints and propel Lu forward.
LumiPoints help Lu move forward through each chapter of the game. When Lu reaches certain milestones, he rewards you with coins.
Coins can be redeemed for HPB eVouchers, where every 300 coins equal $1. You’d need to accumulate 1,500 coins or $5 equivalent before you can redeem a HPB eVoucher. These vouchers can be used at participating merchants like 7-Eleven, FairPrice, Guardian, Klook, etc.
Why do I like LumiHealth?
Holistic focus on health, other than just staying in shape
I was pleasantly surprised to see that LumiHealth takes into consideration a broader view on health, beyond just physical fitness, like dieting and exercise. It includes mental wellness, sleep tracking, nutrition tracking, mindfulness exercises, and personalised coaching to promote overall well-being.
LumiHealth gamifies the experience of improving your health
In addition, LumiHealth uses gamification to make the experience of improving your health more engaging and enjoyable. The app includes interactive games and challenges that incentivise users to complete various health-related tasks, such as getting enough exercise, drinking enough water, and taking time to relax.
It also explains the why behind the challenges it presents. By providing this information, LumiHealth aims to help users understand why certain health behaviours are important and how they can positively impact their well-being.
I feel that this is a good approach that leads to greater engagement and motivation to make lasting changes to improve overall health.
Downsides of LumiHealth
Requires an Apple Watch
One of the downsides of LumiHealth is that it requires an Apple Watch to access many of its features. Sorry Andriod users! This means that users who don’t have an Apple Watch will not be able to fully utilise the app, which could limit its appeal to some users.
Data privacy concerns
As with any app that collects personal data, there may be concerns about data privacy and security. While the app has been developed in collaboration with Apple, which has a strong reputation for privacy and security, there are still some concerns about how my data is being used and protected.
The app collects a wide range of health-related data, including information about the user’s daily activity levels, sleep patterns, and nutrition habits, among other things. This data could end up in the wrong hands in the event of a data breach.
Overall, LumiHealth is an effective and engaging tool for promoting healthy habits and improving overall health and well-being. Its personalised coaching, challenges, and educational resources make it a valuable resource for anyone looking to take control of their health and adopt healthier habits.
The results of the LumiHealth program have been positive thus far, with over 300,000 downloads from Oct 2020 till Sept 2022. It is reported by the Ministry of Health Singapore that the program has resulted in increased physical activity levels, and improved mental well-being, particularly among those who had low activity levels or higher BMI before joining. These results suggest that the LumiHealth program has been effective in promoting healthy behaviors, and improving overall health and well-being.
Whether you’re a seasoned fitness enthusiast or just starting on your health journey, LumiHealth is a good app for anyone looking to live a healthier and happier life.
