All aboard the Korean Fried Chicken train at Choo Choo Chicken @ USJ 10/1B, Subang Jaya

I love fried chicken (who doesn’t?), but good fried chicken is hard to come by. Usually I get my fix of fried chicken at 4Fingers or KyoChon 1991. I was told that Choo Choo Chicken also serves great fried chicken and is a serious contender to the other two. Hence, I headed to their USJ branch to explore and try.

They have a total of 7 outlets in Malaysia – 5 in KL/ Selangor, 1 in Ipoh, Perak; and the last in Kuching, Sarawak. I visited their USJ outlet. Parking is pretty hard to find here, given that USJ / Taipan is a popular spot for food and hang outs.

The 8 flavours offered by Choo Choo Chicken

Choo Choo Chicken offers a total of 8 flavours of fried chicken to pick from – Crispy, Soy, Honey Soy, Sweet, Spicy, Garlic, Creamy Garlic, and Sweet & Spicy. It’s the first time I’ve seen so many flavours being offered in one place! They also offer other Korean staples like army stew, ramen, rice burgers and others. Click here for their full menu. You place your orders vide order chits that are placed at each table.

Kimchi Ramen (RM14.90)

I tried their Kimchi Ramen (RM14.90). It comes with a side of four chicken balls coated in the flavour of your choice. I chose Garlic. If you’re thinking that the chicken balls will be shaped something like a fish ball, you’re utterly mistaken! They are actually quite big pieces of boneless fried chicken. For this price, it’s very reasonable, given the huge portions of the chicken balls, and also their Ramen was pretty good too!

8 wings

I also tried their 8 wings/drumlets (RM20.90). You have the option to pick up to two flavours. Since I already picked Garlic for the Kimchi Ramen, I opted to try their Soy and Spicy flavours.

Warning: The size of their chicken is huge as compared to the other branded chains.

6 pieces Tender (Fillet) + Wedges (RM14.90)

Because I didn’t know the portions are so big, I also ordered their 6 pieces Tender (Fillet) + Wedges (RM14.90), Honey Soy flavoured. Like their fried chicken, their wedges were also huge in size!

Taste-wise – Between all the flavours I tried, Garlic wins hands down. The Garlic flavour was pretty aromatic and complemented the fried chicken well. The Spicy flavour on the hand, was too overwhelming. I didn’t really like the taste of it. Soy was pretty much tasteless.

They sell Korean beverages here too – spanning from canned sodas, juices, coffee, tea and soft drinks. I tried their Lemon Ade (RM6.90) and canned Orange Demisoda (RM6.00).

Fun fact: -ade is a suffix used for a carbonated drink, or a fruit– (often citrus) flavoured beverage. These drinks may be carbonated or non-carbonated. Examples include lemonade, cherryade, limeade, and orangeade.

When I was about to pay, I was pleasantly surprised to find that they recently relocated from the opposite street, and offered a 15% discount as their reopening promotion (the promotion has since ended – only valid till 9th August).

Final verdict – Though Choo Choo Chicken has more flavours and variety, if I were to go just for fried chicken – 4Fingers is still my favourite! Kyochon 1991 is next in line and then only Choo Choo Chicken. But if I ever have a hankering for Ramen, I will definitely visit this chain.
