Pokémon GO Fest 2020 – Day 1

Pokémon Go – I’ve been on and off this game ever since it got released in Malaysia back in August 6, 2016. I remember when I downloaded the app vividly – it was in the midst of my corporate tax compliance reporting peak period. I was working in the office on a Saturday, and my (ex-)neighbour also downloaded the game. It was pure nostalgia – bringing back childhood memories, and a dream come true to bring the childhood imagination of bringing Pokémon coming to life – literally.

Fast forward to today – after numerous Pokémon updates and Pokémon movies – the hype has died down somewhat. Finally after numerous (paid and free) events being held by Pokémon, I’ve finally decided to buy the Pokémon GO Fest 2020 ticket for RM59.90! Though it’s a little pricey, Niantic will be donating proceeds from GO Fest ticket sales (committing a minimum of $5 million) – half of it to use to fund new projects from Black gaming and AR creators that can live on the Niantic platform and the other half to US nonprofit organisations that are helping local communities rebuild. So regardless, if the event turns out to be sucky, I’ll treat the money spent as for a good cause.

Unlike previous Pokémon Go Fest (this is the fourth year running!), this event will held entirely online. This also gives players from all around the world (like me!) a chance to join (rather than previously when it was held in Chicago and Yokohama).

So far what’s unique to pass holders in Day 1 are the use of incense gives more frequent Pokémon spawns, and the Pokémon Unown – Type “G” and “O”! There are also bonuses, like extra XP, double candy, etc., once trainers complete special challenges. Challenges and bonuses change every hour.

Is it worth it? Well we’ll wait and see what Day 2 of the Pokémon GO Fest holds in store.
