Warning: This is the best wild boar burger I’ve ever had!
On the hilly windy roads back to Kota Kinabalu from Kundasang is this awesome roadside shop – LGD Cafe! They serve the best indigenous Dusun food – Sinalau Bakas. It’s the best I’ve ever had so far. The opening days and hour of this cafe is irregular as it depends on the hunting of the day.
Fun fact: Sinalau Bakas is an term in Kadazandusun language. Sinalau means “smoke” and Bakas means means “wild boar”. Sinalau Bakas is a traditional food for Kadazandusun people.
They serve it in different variants – wild boar satay, wild boar burger or just plain wild boar meat with chilli sauce.

The marinated wild boar meat is placed on an open grill with a pile of wood burning underneath. It’s left there to smoke until a customer places an order. This gives the meat its smokey flavour. When an order is received, the smoked meat is transferred to direct heat to be barbecued until fully cooked.
It’s definitely not the most pleasant looking piece of meat, but the flavours are awesome! The BBQ-ed wild boar satay is well seasoned, and very tender! It was not chewy at all. It is also served with traditional chilli sauce.
I’m a big fan of burgers, and I would this particular one is worth a trip back to Sabah just to have it again! The tender wild boar patty and the right amount of sauce just hits the right spot.
