Uncle Jang @ Solaris Mont Kiara

I remember the days back in uni, where we would venture to Kota Kemuning (closed down… sadly) or Mont Kiara for Uncle Jang. Their dak-galbi is still one of the best in Malaysia as compared to those offered by other restaurants.

Their Solaris Mont Kiara branch is located just above Maybank Solaris Month Kiara at the 3rd floor. Parking is quite hard to find though, as there are only limited public parking spots available. I opted to park at the paid parking just behind the row of shops to save myself from going a few rounds just to find parking.

Dak-galbi or spicy stir-fried chicken, is a popular Korean dish made by stir-frying marinated diced chicken in a gochujang -based sauce with sweet potatoes, cabbage, perilla leaves, scallions, tteok (rice cake), and other ingredients.

Sadly though, their sets have shrunk, I remember back then, their dak-galbi portion used to include sweet potatoes and tteok at RM19. But right now though prices are cheaper, it’s just diced chicken in gochujang sauce with cabbage. Guess they had to find a way to cut prices to attract more patrons.

They do still serve water (refillable), 3 side dishes (refillable), lettuce (refillable) and seaweed soup (not-refillable) for free though.

Ironically enough, dak-galbi is known to be a relatively cheap dish served in large portions. Back in the 1970s, it gained popularity with soldiers and students on a budget and earned the nickname “commoners’ galbi” or “university student’s galbi“. But the price tag here in Malaysia ain’t cheap.

How it this dish works is that first you choose either non-spicy (RM15 per pax) or spicy portions (RM17 per pax) of dak-galbi and add any add-ons (like mushroom, cheese (RM8), ramen (RM6), etc.) that you may like (at a price of course!).

Warning: Their spicy one is real spicy!

The ingredients dumped on the hot plate before frying together

So basically, they’ll dump all the ingredients onto the hot plate (including your add-ons either immediately or gradually) and stir-fry it in front of you. I ordered two portions non-spicy dak-galbi and added-on two portions of ramen and cheese. I also ordered their vege pancake (RM12).

After it’s done, you can either eat it straight away, or wrap it round some lettuce.

Note: Usually people order rice, and it’s usually only fried after you have finished most of what’s on the hot plate.

My total bill came up to RM62. I’d probably come back again, when I have the craving for some dak-galbi.
